My second Goodreads Giveaway is for The Lost Princess, which is the final installment in The Peasant Queen series. It was awesome to be able to revisit these beloved characters to tie up the dangling plot elements.

You can enter the giveaway HERE. Again, the contest is for your chance at one of 3 print copies.

If you haven't yet read what happened after the end of The Tyrant King, now's your chance to find out.

Best of luck!

THE LOST PRINCESS has been FOUND

Isn't she beautiful? Deirdra did another fantastic job with the cover. I'm so excited to share this with you!

To celebrate the release of this final book in The Peasant Queen series, today and tomorrow only, you can snatch up THE LOST PRINCESS (for kindle only) for only 99 cents!

There's another reason I'm celebrating. Today is my dad's birthday. He was born April 22, 1942 and would have been 73 today, but he passed away when I was seven years old. I wanted to do something to commemorate my dad, so I chose to release the final book in a series TWENTY FIVE YEARS IN THE MAKING on his birthday.

There's another way you can celebrate with me. Today is the last day you can get Tea for Two, the first in the Eeryan World books (where The Peasant Queen series is set) FREE. Just click that link and grab your copy.

We've been celebrating all week, really, since three of my kids had birthdays yesterday--but this is the last day Tea for Two is free, so I urge you not to miss out.

Just to recap, the Kindle version of THE LOST PRINCESS is only 99 cents until Friday April 24, 2015 when it will return to regular price.

And TEA FOR TWO is FREE today only, to celebrate the release of The Lost Princess.

Happy birthday, Dad. I love you.

Free for TWO days!

It's St Patrick's Day today. Have you got your green on? :)

Today is also my Dan's birthday. Who's Dan, you ask? He's one of my brothers.
He's the little guy on the right. I'm the upside down one.
Not pictured is our brother, David, so--as you can see--I have a fair few.

Dan's birthday, obviously, has always fallen on St Patrick's Day. He probably got teased about that some, but I can't say for certain. Though we're only 2.5 years apart in age, we weren't really close growing up and we don't see each other that much now. Life and distance keep getting in the way.

But today is his birthday, so to mark the occasion I've chosen to celebrate with a free ebook giveaway rather than the traditional giant shamrock cake my mom made every year. Now that, friends, was a labor of love. We're talking full size heart shaped cake pans and part of an 8x8 cake for the stem.

So, on to the free book. Are you a romance lover? Do you like some mystery and intrigue? Then TEA FOR TWO is definitely the story for you! It's set in a land in the world of Eeryan, which is the same world where my Peasant Queen series takes place. Except Brundidge is far removed from the continent where you would find Fayterra, Demarde, or Norvallen.

In Tea for Two, you meet Shannah, a servant with a secret to hide (or two) and Brendan, her employer, who is bent on weeding those secrets out. This is a highly revised version of a story I wrote twenty years ago, and the first story I let my then-brand-new husband read, because it was shorter than my novels. So, as you can see, Tea for Two has a special place in my heart.

It's only free today and tomorrow (March 17th and 18th) in celebration of my brother's (muffled) birthday. Don't hesitate to grab your copy today!

Cover Reveal: THE LOST PRINCESS

This. There were some days I wondered if I'd ever get to this point. I can't even tell you the struggle finishing my Peasant Queen series has been. I've had this cover for nearly a year, and FINALLY I get to share it with you.

To recap, or if you're new, in The Peasant Queen we met Krystal, who found herself thrust into a world of kings and magic and had to grapple with the fallout. The sequel, The Tyrant King, continues Krystal's story with a new villain and a whole new set of problems. The companion novel, The Wild Queen, is similar to these books in that all of them contain action, drama, fighting, wars, and plenty to keep the plot dancing along the page.

The Lost Princess is different. War is over, but conflict isn't. There's still plenty of trouble for the characters to get in to. But instead of exclusively following Krystal, we meet a newbie--Jessenia. The book is all about Jessenia's struggles to accept and come to terms with her place in the world. And it's not easy.

This story challenged me in ways I didn't think possible. It's all about internal struggle and self-worth, and let me tell you that's hard to convey to the page. Action is easy. These characters hate each other, so they fight. But Jessenia doesn't get into a single physical fight in the whole book. Yet in some ways she's the strongest character I've ever written.

The other issue I had with this story is bringing all my threads from previous books to a satisfactory conclusion. That's not to say that I tied everything up in neat little bows (please, that is so not me) but there's resolution, hope for the future, etc. We meet all our favorites from the previous books, and see how time and trouble have changed them. So, happily, the story is far from dull. It's just been an incredible challenge to complete.

So here you go, the blurb/summary and cover. Are you ready? I think Deirdra did an amazing job drawing my vision out. She's the best.

Unwanted. Torn between two families, Lady Jessenia Elsden curses her birth and wishes only for a place where she belongs. But is that place with her father’s people or in the royal courts of Fayterra and Demarde with her mother, the long absent Queen Roweena?
Jessenia will traverse miles, even going to the royal courts of Peldon, to find her heart’s desire—somewhere, someone, that she can call home.

Stay close, readers. Soon I'll upload links for preordering THE LOST PRINCESS and give you an updated release date.

Checking In, and My New Writing Buddy

This is Inigo. He is my new writing buddy. I say that because, whenever I'm trying to write, he hops up onto the desk, sits across the keyboard, tries to grab the cursor, plays with the cables, or tries to climb up and sit on my chest. You know, he's "helping."

Truthfully, if I want to get any writing done I have to shut him out of the office. It's okay, though, because he spends some time sticking his paws under the door to give me encouragement.

My goodness, here he comes now.

As I continue to emerge from this sickness coma I fell into last Thursday, it occurred to me that I needed to post on my blog today to keep up with me "post every Tuesday" goal. Since this is probably all I'm going to manage today, I'd better make it good.

First off, the sickness. This has been probably the most sick I've felt in years. Pretty sure it was the flu, but I did not go and get tested or anything. Why? Simple. The only insurance I have only covers family planning and women's health issues. Not general sicknesses. (basically, if I needed a hysterectomy I'm all set, but get the flu and I'm on my own) I don't have the money to pay for a flu test, just like I couldn't have afforded the flu shot this year. I also don't have prescription coverage that would have helped me pay for Tami-flu. Not to mention the doctor visit. So I had to rough it out the old fashioned way.

I don't recommend it.

Because of this illness, and because basically January 2013 has been one for the incinerator, I'm having to push back Tea for Two ONCE AGAIN. It won't be out this February. Honestly, whenever I do get around to releasing it, you're going to love it. I don't think I'm going to wait another year, though. We'll see how things go.

However, I got this cute letter on Facebook from my friend Lizzy Hughes, who was part of our Tooele Writers' Group when I still lived out there:

Dear Wonderful Cheri,

Since moving to Idaho I have been employed by a wonderful bookstore wherein we sell your wonderful book. Recently, I had a bright, bubbly woman drag me into the fiction section and beg me for recommendations. I suggested the book I was currently reading and she marked it on a list, along with a few others I pointed out from past readings. Then she walked me through her favorites, insistent that I must read all of them if I had not already done so. At the very TOP of her favorites list, she pointed to a familiar purple cover and I said, "Oh, yes, I know the Peasant Queen. Cheri and I were in a writing group together when I lived in Utah."

This bright, bubbly woman has commanded me to give you a message: The Peasant Queen is one of her absolute favorite books. She loves your characters, she loves the story, and she hates that she has been left with no continuation. She has given the book out to everyone in her circle of reading friends and they are all waiting on pins and needles with bated breath for the next story. Also, if you could ever make your way to Idaho for a signing, every single one of them would attend no matter what for the chance to meet you in person.

That is all. ♥

This has inspired me, so I'm going to refocus my time on finishing up The Lost Princess so it can be ready for it's May release. I truly hope to contact my "bright, bubbly" fan and let her know she can read The Wild Queen and The Tyrant King in the mean time. :)

You Asked for It!

I've had A LOT of people asking me when The Tyrant King will be available for purchase. So, after some deliberation, planning, plotting, and mayhem--here it is.

The date.

The OFFICIAL announcement of publication.

The Tyrant King will be available for purchase--wait for it--on June 20, 2012!

I know, why June? It's like, forever!

But actually it's not. From this side of publication, it's pretty dang soon. 71 days. Here's the breakdown:

April is editing month. This is the time set aside for The Tyrant King to be professionally EDITED (she has the manuscript right now). This is a professional job, mind you, and will likely take the rest of the month to complete.

Then suddenly we're in May. May is set aside as the month of formatting. Getting The Wild Queen available as a PRINT NOVEL has taught me that this process takes longer than one may think. First off, my very awesome friend (ahem, KAREN HOOVER) who is helping me make the inside of the book beautiful has a WRITERS CONFERENCE to go to the first part of May. She's presenting, so there's a lot of work for her to do. So that leaves about 3 weeks in May to get The Tyrant King all prettied up, check for errors, think we've found them all, find a new one, fix it, then another, then another, order print copies--and, you guessed it--find another mistake.

Which brings us straight into June. So why not release the book June 1? June 8? June 12? Aside from the simple act of padding a few extra days into my time line for unforeseen circumstances (you wouldn't want to be waiting the book's release on June 10th only to have it delayed a week, would you?), June 20th is a significant anniversary for me. It's a date that matters, which will make the book's release matter just that much more. And, since I plan to have a rockin' release week June 18-22, I don't think we'll be short of excitement.

Mark your calenders! Here comes The Tyrant King!

Upcoming Book Launch/Tour

Hi there! I'm collecting bloggers for my upcoming book launch and tour for The Tyrant King. What's super-duper exciting (I seriously just said super-duper, wow) is that I'm launching my book in conjuction with my sister-of-my-heart's FIRST book being published!!! Are you excited? I totally am.

Here's the skinny: Her author name is M.L. Chesley, and her pirate-fantasy novel is called Adversarius: Shadow of the Rose, Book One

What's it about? Glad you asked: When it comes to politics, Kayta likes to let her sword arm do the talking. The only way to gain peace for her kingdom would be to enter into an arranged marriage with her enemy's son, Alabassin. There are worse ways to end wars.

And, of course, who is this lady? Aside from my friend and fellow author who happens to be married to my husband's brother, this is M.L. Chesley: M. L. Chesley is an Alaska based author, online blogger and MMORPG junkie. She has been writing fantasy for several years. Between writing, work and family she barely has time for much gaming, but some days, raids take precedence over all. If you would like to
learn more about her world, created in this book, go to www.mlchesley.webs.com. You can also follow her blog at www.caledonialass.blogspot.com.

I would LOVE to share with you a book cover for Adversarius, but, alas, it's not live yet. I CAN share with you (again) the cover for The Tyrant King (sequel to The Peasant Queen, my 1st novel), along with my book blurb:

The kingdom of Fayterra has enjoyed four years of peace since Jareth was crowned King and married Krystal. But, on the eve of Alana’s wedding, a stranger arrives with a link to the family that threatens to change everything. An enemy is revealed. Their people are under attack. War is declared. And not everyone will survive.
As the future becomes bleaker and the mystery continues to unravel, Krystal’s enemies will learn just how far she will go to defend the people she loves.

Now for the details. Our book launch/blog tour fun will happen in June. Participating bloggers will be entered to win a $10 Amazon gift card, and those who enter the contest will be entered to win a prize package of books and candy. So far, for that package, I have Watched by Cindy Hogan, Ireland's Pirate Queen, Variant by Robison Wells, Michael Vey by Richard Paul Evans, and a beautiful leather bound journal. I will also throw in a copy of The Wild Queen, which is the prequel to The Peasant Queen.

Both books (Adversarius and The Tyrant King) will be available in print and e-book formats to cater to all readers, so never fear. You will get your copy. :)

Now, who wants to volunteer for all this fun? I need to collect at least 15 willing blog participants to host my tour. I've had a couple volunteers trickle in, but not nearly enough. This is my official plea. Please comment with your email if you are willing to be a host so I can contact you. You might also want to specify which book you'd like to spotlight or review, or if you'd rather do an author interview (and which of us you'd like to pick on lol).

Thanks!

Writer-Ish

I've been struggling with this post because I don't feel like I have anything NEW to report, so I'll just be rehashing the same stuff. At least in my writer world. In my family, my beautiful daughter just finished performing in her first community play, has been utterly consumed by the acting bug, and is thoroughly crushed she can't be in the next play. But she will audition for the one after that. Guaranteed.

My last POST on Mormon Mommy Writers has my big news. The Wild Queen is now available in PRINT! This is the book that isn't like any book I have or probably ever will write again. It does not have a happy ending, but all of my beta readers solved the 'mystery' so I felt confident releasing it to the world. This is the book I'd love to see a book club read, because the endless debate about the ending would be stimulating. I'm actually kind of surprised when someone misunderstands what happens at the end of the book.

Also, in that post, is an invitation to join me on Mormon Mommy Writers this Friday. I'm going to reveal the plot of my most recent project, and ask for help with the title. Usually the title for a project comes easily to me, so I'm really stumped and bothered by the fact that I can't think of one that sits just right in my head. I'm really looking forward to getting some help with it. Please join us Friday!

Today's the Day!

Don't forget to be part of "Books are for Lovers" and buy a book today from your local bookstore. Let's keep those brick-and-mortar stores alive!

In other news, Cedar For officially passed on The Tyrant King last week. I've been so busy (with LOTS of help, trust me) getting The Wild Queen print books in order it's actually taken me some time to process this latest rejection. I immediately moved forward with plans to self-publish the book, but I didn't really work through how I felt. Consequently, my emotions have been on a roller coaster ever since. Today, though, I think I've struck a balance.

Am I sad/confused/distraught that my publisher didn't feel my work was worth a second chance? Hello? I'm human. Of course it affected me.

Am I going to let it stop me? No way!

Lately I've been a veritable fountain of worthy story ideas. So they don't want this one. Yes, it means I'll be self-publishing TTK and TLP, but that doesn't mean I'll be self-publishing forever. And, even if I am, so what? I write my very best then I send it to other writers and readers for opinions on improving it. Then I make it better. THEN I send it to a professional editor to show me what else I'm missing. Then I make it better. And that is what the reader sees--the very, very best I can show in my writing.

Self-publishing means control. I control what goes into the book. I control what the cover looks like. It also means responsibility. I control the advertising/promotion of said book. So if it doesn't sell, then I'm the weak link here. :)

The Tyrant King will be out in May/June. The Lost Princess will be out in 2013. I can't wait to be able to show you the cover for TTK. But, for now, enjoy this one!

The Wild Queen print version is looking amazing. I did find some errors in my proof copy, so I will need to order another proof to make sure it's all fixed. (at least what I found, lol) I'm hoping copies will go live in March. Yay!

Launch Fail

Today was the day I planned to announce the arrival of my newest short story--just in time for Valentine's Day--Tea for Two. It's a cute, Victorian romance full of mystery, lies, and intrigue. You know, just like a romance should be. :)

Launch fail.

In a world of self-imposed deadlines, this one's a fail. I have this fantastic cover, and a story I've loved since the first time I wrote it over ten years ago. But, as I edited and changed and cleaned and polished this fun story, I realized the zest was gone. The zeal. The interest. And if I couldn't feel the love, how could I write a good romance? It would be bland, boring, without spark. DULL.

After much soul searching and good kick in the pants from my husband, I dropped it. It does no good to work on a project I'm not passionate about, because the reader can tell.

Please don't think I'm just sitting around, though. I want let you know I've still got two irons in the fire, and they're heating up nicely. One is the PRINT version of my book, The Wild Queen, which will soon be available for sale. The other is a brand spanking new contemporary YA called Intersect. It's so new, I'm still working on the first chapter. But I think that's what I needed. I've been editing so much over the last year or so that I just needed to start something fresh. Already I can tell it's going to be amazing. :)

A Story on Layering

Last week, Rebecca had to have port surgery. If you've been keeping up with her BLOG, you'll know that she's been having trouble with the chemo and they had to do something other than the IV method. This is one BRAVE lady, people. She hates all the medical stuff, hates needles, hates hospitals, etc--and has really come through it all amazingly well. Also, Monday (July 4) her youngest had his 4th birthday. He made sure we understood that all the fireworks and parties were for him. :) What a cutie!

Now I have just the teensiest request for me. Here's where the layers come in.

The Wild Queen, my e-book, is the story of a great, epic romance--but it is not a romance novel. Unfortunately, in categorizing the story for sale, someone *cough* me *cough* listed romance as one of the search words. This has led to at least one misunderstanding. A kind reader picked it up on amazon.com expecting a romance, and was sorely disappointed.

Please understand I appreciate feedback, even the not-so-nice kind, because it gives me a chance to analyze my writing, learn and grow. I also understand a review is simply someone's opinion, and I don't intend to try to please everyone. This reader took the story at face value and didn't like what they saw. Because of that, they jumped to a couple of erroneous conclusions, and really socked it to my non-romance romance novel. I've purposely layered this story, making it more complex than it would otherwise appear. I'm also confident I didn't over-complicate the plot because I've had several readers tell me what they think was really going on--and they are right.

So what's my problem? Simply this: the ONLY review the book has on amazon.com is a 1 star review, which I feel does the book--and my efforts to raise money for my friend's medical expenses--a disservice. My request? If you've read the book, please go to the product page on AMAZON and leave your review. I don't want anyone to diss this person's review or sink to name calling, because that's not what this is about. All I ask is that there be other opinions on there, too.

Thanks!

Changes

I got to see Rebecca on Sunday. She's sporting a really cute, black wig now. As she put it, her hubby really likes this one. HERE is where she talks about it on her blog, and you get to see a picture!

She also has been busy working on things other than the cute, butterfly pins. Check THIS out. Personally, I think it's a brilliant idea. I mean, how many brides end up barefoot by the end of the reception? :)

Rebecca also talks about her last round of chemo HERE. And HERE is where she gets up on her soapbox for a little bit and reminds us a little of how precious life really is.

And, if this blog post isn't "linktastic" enough, I've got a few more for you. If you've been haunting my blog, wanting to help out by buying my books, but just find a $4.99 ebook TOO much of a risk, now you can get The Wild Queen for just $2.99!!! Remember, SMASHWORDS offers the book in all formats, but you can also get it directly for your KINDLE or NOOK. I've heard really good things about it. :)

Happy reading!

The Home Stretch

Launching an e-book can be complicated. You want to make sure you're not just putting a story up for the sake of saying you've done it. You want--at least I want--to be sure I'm putting the best story out there that I can.

But, we're in the home stretch now. On Friday, May 13th, readers will be able to purchase The Wild Queen for their e-readers or even home computers.

In case I haven't shared yet, (or if you missed it) The Wild Queen is the story of King Lucien and Queen Roweena--Gregory's parents.

Roweena is the crown princess of Norvallen, a tiny kingdom with only one thing of value—the Healers' Grove. The trees in this small section of forest are enchanted, giving a sap that can be mixed into potions or salves to heal almost any wound.

And it’s in high demand.

Lucien, the young king of neighboring Demarde, comes to Roweena’s father seeking an alliance, but comes away with a marriage contract for young Roweena’s hand. Furious and stubborn, this untamed beauty vows he will never conquer her. But the contract purposely gives her time to come to terms with her fate.

Before Lucien can return, Roweena’s home is attacked and her parents are murdered. The Healer’s Grove is also attacked—burned to the ground. With nothing more than her horse and the clothes on her back, Roweena goes to the only person she knows can help her. Lucien. But he can do nothing with no legal claim to Norvallen, so they marry.

Lucien and his army destroy the invaders and rescue what remains of Roweena’s people. He then makes Norvallen a part of his kingdom, but separate, ruled by a man Lucien trusts who answers only to him.

Roweena tries to carve a piece of life out for herself in Demarde, but her wild ways often clash with Lucien’s calm, reasoning manner. They have a son, Gregory, and then a daughter, Falina. When Roweena is pregnant for the third time, she vanishes. Speculation runs rampant. Was she kidnapped, fallen victim to a mysterious enemy? Or did she run away?

Enjoy!

An Editing Life

My goal this week is to finish the edits for The Wild Queen so I can get it out to my beta readers and have it ready to go by the end of this month. My reason? Next week the kids are on Spring Break--and three of my kids have a birthday next week. Ya, I'm not going to get anything done unless it's this week. :)

Saturday at Write Here in Ephraim, author Michael Knudsen taught a class on self editing that was incredibly timely--at least for me. I feel a teeny bit robbed, since we ran out of time and he had to cut a large part of the presentation short. His technique was endorsed by the incomparable Tristi Pinkston, who not only is a published author of 6 novels but also a freelance editor. Tristi appreciated Michael's editing process, and appreciated how dynamic his finished story turned out to be because of it. Wouldn't we all want to have a finished book like that? I know I do.

That's this week's project, anyway. I'll let you know next week how I do. :)

Another Ebook

I'm really excited to announce the coming of The Wild Queen, a not-quite-novel-length prequel to my published novel, The Peasant Queen. My excellent cover designer, Deirdra Coppel, has come through once again. Don't you agree?

Here's a little about the story:
Roweena is the crown princess of Norvallen, a tiny kingdom with only one thing of value—the Healer’s Grove.

It gives her too long.

Watch this blog closely during April for announcements of when The Wild Queen will be available!

YES!!!!!

You can't see it, but I am so doing the happy dance right now!

I've struggled for a long time now over the remaining books in THE PEASANT QUEEN series. Initially, they were going to be THE PEASANT QUEEN, THE WILD QUEEN and THE TYRANT KING. While TPQ and TTK have been rich, fantastic stories to tell, TWQ has been like a constant plague, the kind that makes you want to go into accounting or something. There's a great story there, but it lacks a solid, satisfying resolution. And the main character, or at least a primary character, vanishes 2/3 of the way through the book. That mystery is never solved. In fact, the bad guy is never unmasked, and gets away scott-free.

HOW can this be a satisfying story?

In truth, it can't be. Or it would take an author way, WAY more talented than I am to bring it to life.

But, part of the story of TWQ is told in THE PEASANT QUEEN. Another part of the mystery is revealed in THE TYRANT KING. And, at the end of THE TYRANT KING there is a character that the readers don't really get to know, someone with tons of angst and conflict who has a story to tell.

She is THE LOST PRINCESS.

Move over, Sloth.

Okay, I'm actually doing it this time. I'll be participating in Tristi Pinkston's JULY WRITING CHALLENGE. Click on over and check it out. She keeps it pretty simply--you set the goal and then post on your progress.

Since I have so much work to do STILL on The Wild Queen, I thought it's the perfect opportunity to get this monster finished and sent off. So, that's my July goal: Revise and submit The Wild Queen.

I know I can do it. Just watch me. ;)

Back on the (Writing) Wagon

I don't think I've ever had two characters who caused me so much frustration before. Some of you have been introduced to them, though I noticed I've gotten a few more followers lately. Cool.

Anyway, I'm talking about Lucien and Roweena. Roweena, of course, is the main character in The Wild Queen. Or is she? Can you have a character that is the TITLE character without being the MAIN character?

I ask myself this a lot, actually. Funny thing is, I do the same thing in The Tyrant King--because who on Earth would go for a tyrannical protagonist? That would be some seriously misunderstood dude.

But Roweena and Lucien have driven me in circles, tied me in knots, and made me crazy. Ideas pour into my brain like water, but writing them becomes struggled and stilted. Ugh. My first problem? I had a "Wild" queen who really wasn't wild. She was in her early youth, untamed and all, but once disaster struck and she married she became quiet, docile--not at all "my" Roweena.

And I have a sneaking suspicion Lucien is the main character, because he's the one who sees the narrative through from beginning to end. But I always write about girls for girls. Now I'm writing about a boy for girls. I'm going to need a LOT of male perspective, here.

There's nothing wrong with Lucien. I quite like him. He's flawed, but brave. Noble but insecure. Handsome, but--no, he's handsome lol.

The worst part now is that I set myself a goal, then let frustration and life interrupt me, and now I feel bogged down because I know I won't turn out a quality narrative AND reach my goal. And that just stinks.

Have I mentioned it's June 16th?
